There are no bedrock exposure on the Sheet and the sub-Kalahari geological map is essentially based on the logs of about 192 boreholes coupled with an interpretation of the high-resolution airborne magnetic data. For the most part, the borehole information is from the percussion holes drlled either for groundwater or in serach of concealed kimberlites. The kimberlite exploration boreholes are found in three major clusters in the central, eastern and southern parts of the Sheet. Two cored boreholes (MKT-1 & MK-2) sited in the east-centre of the Sheet were part of a gold exploration programme that took place during the 1990s.
